Pwnie awards are held yearly at Black Hat security conference, which is the largest information security conference in the world. pwnie (pronounced as pony) refers to the word pwn, which is a slang term derived from the word own. the word ‘pwn’ is used among the gamers and internet hackers which implies humiliation or domination of a rival. In short it implies ‘to own’ or ‘to take control of’ .

Sony got a pwnie for ‘most epic fail’ as Sony Online Entertainment shut down its servers for a month, due to a network hack around may 2011, which left millions of personal accounts exposed. It was the biggest security attack in Sony’s history, and Sony was a sole nominee for this category.
However Pwnie awards are not intended only to mock companies on their incompetence in information security, it also accredits excellence in the field too.
