Samsung Beats Apple in Smartphone Sales

Samsung Tops Apple in Q1 2012 Smartphone Sales:

According to a research firm IDC, Samsung is ahead of Apple in smartphone sales worldwide for Q1 2012. Samsung showed a 267% year-over year growth in smartphone sales. Samsung sold 44.2million smartphones according to IDC, and became the worlds largest smartphone vendor. The news came just after 2 weeks of it becoming the world’s largest handset maker in overall mobile phone sales beating Nokia.

Apple Is Dropped to 2nd Place in Smartphone Sales

Apple is at 2nd place with 88% growth. Apple accounted for 35.1million smartphone sales with 24.2 percent of the first quarter’s smartphone market share. Apple is up 18.3 percent in smartphone sales as compared to Q1 2011(last year).

Nokia, RIM & HTC Are at 3rd, 4th and 5th Place Respectively:

Nokia Sold 11.9million Smartphone and came at third in smartphone sales.It saw a 50.8% drop in market share, making it 8.2 percent only.

RIM saw 29.7% drop in smartphone sales as compared to the same period of the last year.It sold about 9.7million smartphones. RIM’s market share is now only 6.7%.

HTC came at fifth with 6.9million unit sales shrinking its market share to 4.8% in the smartphone industry.

Android Market share surges to 61% according to NPD

Another market research company of North America, NPD says that android is the largest first quarter smartphone operating system accounting for 61% sales in U.S alone. iOS is at 2nd place with 29% market share. RIM is at 3rd place with 5%, while Windows phone accounted for only 2% of market share.

Due to a decision by Samsung taken during last summer, it does not publicly disclose its phone sales data.A decision officially attributed to a desire for a competitive advantage. So market research firms use alternate data to estimate Samsung’s performance.
